The Facebook Status Check

UncategorizedKyle Rutkin4 Comments

I know you’ve seen them; the victimized status where a certain emo facebook friend (whose probably been listening to a lot of Death Cab for Cutie) decides to post how everyone in the world is out to get them. Emo friend #1: This is so stupid; I don’t understand why this always happens to me.

Emo friend #2: I just wish someone would care.

I know, I know, I do the same thing when I see these on my newsfeed---huge eye roll followed up by a quick scroll down to avoid being sucked into their glass case of emotion. If I really care about the person, I might throw in a “hang in there bro,” or “things will get better.”

But the crazy thing is, we all do it, we just don't always post it as our status. Let's take my own train of thought yesterday while I was spacing out on a twenty minute drive.

“Dude, why the hell does that person not email me back, that’s so disrespectful, what, am I not worth emailing back?”

There it is, the huge epiphany, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, how did that negativity wind up in my head? That’s crazy! This was followed up by a huge laughing outburst while imagining a futuristic iphone application that allowed all inner thoughts to be posted as my status like a twitter feed. And if this were to happen, how embarrassed I would have been with my status.

So here is a quick check I do daily. I do an overview of the thoughts in my head. If I would not be able to post the stream of thinking as a status update, without my own self eye rolling, then I need to change what the hell I’m thinking about. I will immediately grab a book, listen to a motivational speech, whatever it takes to get these thoughts back in order. I am now a firm believer that our heads should be treated like computer software that can come down with some serious glitches. I'm also a firm believer that flooding yourself with positivity is like installing Norton Anti-virus in your brain. It will kill these little self doubt viruses that like to infect your thoughts and disrupt your momentum.

So I would like to introduce to the world the facebook status check. Do it on the reg. Change your thoughts, change your path, change your life.
